The Illinois Notary Public Course of Study provides the applicable education and examination for individuals entering the profession, renewing a commission, or adding Electronic Notarization.

Become an Illinois Notary

Complete the applicable education and examination requirements for an initial Illinois Notary Public commission.

Renew Your Commission

Complete the applicable education and examination requirements associated with renewing an Illinois Notary Public commission.

Add Electronic Notarization

Complete the applicable education and examination requirements for adding an Electronic Notary Public commission.

Completion of the course and examination does not guarantee approval of a notary commission. Final eligibility and commission approval are determined by the Illinois Secretary of State.

What to Expect.

Live, Instructor-Led Education

Receive live Illinois-specific notary education from an approved notary course provider.

Three-Hour Instruction Session

Participate in a scheduled three-hour, instructor-led education session, followed by the required examination

Traditional Notarization

Review the duties, responsibilities, and Illinois requirements associated with traditional notarial acts.

Electronic Notarization

Receive instruction on Illinois requirements applicable to electronic notarial acts.

Required Final Examination

Complete the required 50-question final examination after the instructional session.

85% Passing Score

Achieve a minimum score of 85% on the final examination to successfully complete the course.

Student Requirements

  • Register using the full legal name that matches the government-issued photo identification presented at the course.

  • Bring acceptable government-issued photo identification.

  • Attend and participate for the required instructional period.

  • Complete the required identity-verification process.

  • Complete the 50-question final examination.

  • Earn a minimum score of 85% to pass.

  • Satisfy all attendance, identity-verification, and examination requirements before receiving a completion certificate.
